Don’t let ads fool you!
Gonçalo Fonseca, 11.º A | 27-11-2025
Today’s world is filled to the brim with advertisements. Almost everywhere you look you will see at least one, especially in cities.
Some people can’t even look out of their windows to see the landscape because there is a giant billboard blocking the view.
It is no doubt advertising has come to stay and has changed work. But, interestingly, advertisements themselves have changed.
If you look up a commercial from the last century, you will notice how much more informative and slower paced it was. It felt like they were trying to sell the product. But as decades went on, they became shorter with less information. They are no longer selling something; they are trying to steal your attention.
It is a shame in fact, I can no longer trust them to buy good products. That is why I am very careful as a consumer. I don’t buy a product just because its advertisement appealed or attracted me. I look for information about it first. And when it is not available, it is likely that the brand that is selling or promoting it, is omitting it on purpose.
Next time you buy or become interested in a product, don’t forget to look in deeper than what the short ad tells you, especially if it is expensive. Transparency is the key in this chaos of “stealing attention” advertising.
“An ad is finished only when you no longer can find a single element to remove.” – Robert Fleege
