Athena is a Film You Can’t Miss
Martim Sá, 9.º D | 13-05-2025
When Athena was released, many people became angry, especially people affected by racism and problems linked to where they live.
The movie Athena was directed by Romain Gavras.
The action takes place in a suburban French housing estate called Athena, following the tragic death of a young boy.
The main characters are three brothers: Abdel, a soldier trying to keep the peace; Karim, the leader of the riot seeking justice; and Moktar, a drug dealer worried about his business. They represent different reactions to social injustice.
The movie depicts a violent uprising in a community after a video appears to show police officers killing a young boy. It follows a chaotic 24-hour siege where brothers find themselves on opposite sides of a growing civil conflict.
The movie is interesting because of its incredible cinematography, featuring long, immersive tracking shots that make the viewer feel like they are in the middle of the riots. It also explores complex themes of family loyalty and social tension.
When the movie ended, I felt overwhelmed and thoughtful because the tragic ending shows how violence and manipulation can destroy families and entire communities beyond repair.
“All drama is conflict, you know? Even if it’s a love story—it’s always about conflict.” – Romain Gavras
